HOUSTON -- Nick Burdi will miss the remainder of the season after having vascular surgery Tuesday in St. Louis.
Burdi, a rookie reliever, had surgery aimed at relieving symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. Burdi had been on the injured list since April 23 because of nerve irritation in his right elbow and forearm.
Burdi is expected to be fully recovered by the time spring training begins in February.
Facing the Diamondbacks at PNC Park, Burdi collapsed to the ground in pain after throwing a pitch in the eighth inning of a 12-4 loss. He has been out ever since and spent most of the past two months rehabbing at the Pirates’ training facility in Bradenton, Fla.
Burdi, 26, made 11 relief appearances this season, going 2-1 with a 9.35 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. His earned run average was inflated by his final outing in which he was charged with five runs in 1/3 inning.
He made his major-league debut with the Pirates last Sept. 11. He appeared in two games last season, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1 1/3 innings.
The Pirates acquired Burdi in a trade from the Phillies at the Winter Meetings following the 2017 season for cash considerations. The Phillies had selected Burdi from the Twins in the Rule 5 Draft. He was recovering from Tommy John surgery at the time he was drafted.
Burdi was the Twins’ second-round draft pick in 2014 from the University of Louisville.
He is a native of Downer’s Grove, Ill., in suburban Chicago.
