Cartoon Canon: Le Streak Magnifique!

RICHMOND, Va. -- I was in my senior year of high school in 1990, and without access to KBL or the Penguins on the radio, I followed Mario Lemieux’s scoring streak the old-fashioned way, in the box scores printed each morning in the Akron Beacon Journal.

When the streak ended, the news actually made SportsCenter, and boy, was I bummed. Everything had seemed to come so easily to Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers, winning individual honors and Stanley Cups by the truckload, while here were the Penguins, still stuck in neutral waiting for any playoff success, and even Super Mario always seeming to come in second.

Of course, all that patience would pay off in a big way just 16 months later!
