MATT GRUBBA, born in Sydney, Australia, and raised just outside the tiny town of Rustburg, Va., covers Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC for DKPittsburghSports.com..

Career: Matt graduated in 2005 from the University of Pittsburgh. In four years, he went from a first-semester schedule of honors chemistry and calculus to deciding a career in sports was where his heart was, graduating with a degree in communications and a minor in coaching. Having worked for all three student media outlets at Pitt, he cobbled together freelance work in print and radio before being hired by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in 2006. In his tenure with the Trib, he began at the Sewickley Herald — where he twice was the Keystone Press Award first-place winner for Sports Beat Writing — and covered local sports for five weekly papers and the Leader Times in Kittanning. Matt was the Riverhounds beat writer from 2013-18 and chipped in as part of on-site coverage teams for events ranging from the U.S. Open to the Steelers to WPIAL championships in 22 of 24 sports. (Softball and rifle are the two that escaped him.)

Personal: Matt lives in Brentwood with his all-around awesome fiancée, Tiffany, and her son, Glenn. He grew up playing basketball, soccer and football in his high school years, and even threw in an ill-fated semester of rugby while at Pitt. These days, playing in an over-30s soccer league and a local darts league are his main competitive exploits, but he has remained around the hardwood as the public address announcer for Carnegie Mellon basketball the past seven seasons.
