Kendall Coyne Schofield, fresh off her performance as the first woman to compete in the NHL's All-Star Skills Competition, will work as an analyst for NBC Sports Network for the Penguins' matchup with the Lightning on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.
"I love to be able to talk about the game and, when this opportunity presented itself, I was more than ecstatic,” Coyne Schofield told USA Today.
The 26-year-old Olympic gold-medalist and Minnesota Whitecaps forward earned a degree in communications from Northeastern University, where she also worked as a sideline reporter. She'll appear on Wednesday's pregame and intermission shows, as well as the 'Inside the Glass' segments with Pierre McGuire. The pregame will begin at 7:30 p.m.
“We saw the enormous reaction the players and fans had when she blazed that amazing speed, and want to celebrate her accomplishment,” said Sam Flood, executive producer and president of production at NBC Sports. “We think viewers will be very interested to hear her lean in and talk about hockey during a regular-season game.”
"I will obviously be doing some research tonight, tomorrow, leading up to Wednesday’s game,” Coyne Schofield said. “Obviously, the Lightning and Penguins are premier teams with a lot of superstars, so it will be an excellent game to talk about.”
Unlike in the Skills Competition, Coyne Schofield isn't the first woman to step into this role for NBC, as former U.S. Olympian AJ Mleczko Griswold has also worked as an analyst during NHL broadcasts for the network.
