Penguins prospect defenseman Calen Addison is one of 43 players invited to the development camp for Canada's national junior team, Hockey Canada announced Wednesday.
The camp will be held from July 27 to Aug. 4 in Plymouth, Mich. The 43 players will be split into two teams and will play a total of four games in Plymouth -- two against the United States, one against Finland, and one against Sweden.
The full roster can be found here.
This development camp is the first step in the evaluation process toward building the roster for the World Junior Championship.
Addison, the Penguins' second-round pick in 2018, was one of 34 players who made it to Canada's selection camp for the junior team last December, but did not make the eventual 22-man roster.
Addison, at 19 years old, is in his last year of eligibility to play for the Canadian junior team.
Addison will play for the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL during the season in what will be his final year of junior hockey. He recorded 31 goals and 132 assists in 202 games over the past three seasons, including 11 goals and 54 assists in 67 games last season.
Bill Guerin recently compared the 5-feet 10, 180-pound Addison to a “new-age NHL defenseman” on an NHL Network Radio appearance, saying that teams now aren’t as focused on size as they are a player’s mobility and agility. While Addison is on the smaller side, he’s a great puck-mover and he can skate. The organization is high on him.
The Penguins already signed Addison to a three-year entry-level contract in April that will kick in whenever Addison turns pro.
