The Penguins have named Madison Nikkel the team's assistant video coach, Jim Rutherford announced on Thursday.
Nikkel, 25, has spent the past three seasons as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's video coach. Prior to joining Wilkes-Barre, he spent four years at Boston College where he did pre-scout and in-game video analysis for the men's team.
In Pittsburgh, Nikkel will work under head video coach Andy Saucier in video breakdowns and analysis and compiling video for scouts.
“With technology constantly evolving and changing the way we prepare for and analyze games, we want to remain cutting-edge and in the forefront among NHL teams,” said Saucier. “With that being said, we are extremely excited to add Madison to our video coaching staff.”
Including Nikkel, the past five Wilkes-Barre video coaches are now in the NHL.
Sean Andrake, Wilkes-Barre's video coach in the 2015-16 season, is an assistant video coach for the Stars. Samson Lee was video coach from 2012-15 (and like Nikkel, was plucked from Boston College) and has been the head video coach for the Kings since 2015. Saucier worked for two seasons in Wilkes-Barre from 2010-12 before being promoted to head video coach in Pittsburgh. Jim Britt was video coach from 2006-09, then held the same position in Pittsburgh for three years and has been a team manager for the last five.
