Kessel explains viral theater photo

After Phil Kessel was traded to the Coyotes in June he put his Pittsburgh home on the market for $2.1 million.

The pictures of the interior on the realtor.com listing made their rounds on the internet, with one of the pictures getting a little more attention than others.

The picture of Kessel's theater room, featuring one, solitary chair in front of the screen, went viral:

Given Kessel's eccentric personality, not many people questioned the picture, and just accepted that Kessel liked sitting alone and watching movies in his spare time.

In an NHL Network appearance this week, Kessel explained that the real story behind the lone chair isn't quite as interesting.

"I was selling my house and, you know, there's nothing in there, right?” Kessel said. “It was used as a bedroom, like a blow-up mattress and everything. I actually never used that movie room one time, but my realtor's wife thought it was a good thing to put in there one chair or something, to look like I used it or something. But, I don't know. I never used it one time there."

When Kessel saw the photo making the rounds on social media, he let his realtor hear about it.

"Oh yeah, I called him," Kessel laughed. "I said, 'What's going on here?" I was getting a lot of slack for that. It is what it is though."
