CRANBERRY, Pa. -- The Penguins have recalled forward Adam Johnson from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Jim Rutherford announced on Wednesday.

To clear a roster spot for Johnson, Alex Galchenyuk has been placed on injured reserve. Galchenyuk is still dealing with a nagging lower-body injury and is day-to-day. Galchenyuk is expected to be out at least seven days as a result of being placed on injured reserve.

Johnson was the only forward recalled from Wilkes-Barre, which could be an indication that Patric Hornqvist, who is also day-to-day with a lower-body injury, will be ready to play on Thursday. If Hornqvist is ready to play, and Johnson and Andrew Agozzino play, that would give the Penguins 12 forwards.

Johnson, 25, only appeared in one preseason game with Pittsburgh before he was injured in training camp. He scored a goal and recorded a plus-2 rating in the preseason opener against the Sabres. Johnson was cleared to return to play on Sept. 29 and assigned to Wilkes-Barre. He recorded two assists in Wilkes-Barre's season opener on Saturday, a 4-3 win over the Hershey Bears.
