Andrew Agozzino. -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

WASHINGTON -- The Penguins put forward Andrew Agozzino on waivers at noon Sunday.

Agozzino was still in the lineup for the Penguins' noon game against the Capitals in Washington. If he clears at noon on Monday, the Penguins have the option to assign him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but they do not have to.

Sunday's noon deadline was the last time to put a player on waivers before Monday's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

The main reason for putting Agozzino on the waiver wire is likely to just to retain his AHL eligibility. After the deadline, no player can be sent down to the AHL unless:

  1. The player was already in the AHL at the time of the deadline, then recalled after the deadline.
  2. The player was on the NHL roster at the time of the deadline because they were injured (injured players are not eligible to be reassigned to the AHL), and they had previously been on the active NHL roster for less than 25 percent of the period between the start of the regular season leading up to the trade deadline..

For this reason, you typically see players assigned to the AHL in paper-only transactions on the day of the deadline, then "recalled" after the deadline passes. Zach TrotmanAnthony Angello and Sam Lafferty will likely also be assigned to Wilkes-Barre on paper only just prior to the trade deadline, to retain their eligibility. Agozzino is the only one of the group of skaters who is waivers-eligible at the moment, which would explain why he was put on waivers on this day.
