The Penguins on Thursday placed forward prospect Linus Olund on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination.

The termination will become official on Friday at noon.

Olund, the Penguins' 2017 fifth-round pick, had one year remaining on his entry-level contract.

Olund, 22, joined Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the 2018-19 season, where he recorded six goals and nine assists in 61 games. He primarily played a fourth-line role and was a healthy scratch at times. The following summer, the Penguins loaned Olund back to his former Swedish team, Brynas.

Olund scored four goals and 10 assists in 49 games for Brynas this season, primarily playing on the third line. Earlier this month, Swedish reporter Johan Svensson reported that Olund signed a contract extension with Brynas believed to be for three years.

Given that Olund was not expected to return to North America, terminating his contract frees up a contract spot toward the Penguins' 50-contract limit.
