If there is a college football season this fall, Pitt will have some extra depth at quarterback, the athletic department announcing Friday afternoon that redshirt freshman Joey Yellen has been granted immediate eligibility from the NCAA.
"This is outstanding news for Joey and our entire program," Pat Narduzzi said. "He's been such a great addition, on and off the field, for us. We're thrilled for him and his family. We are all very grateful for our compliance staff's excellent work throughout this process."
Yellen joined the panthers in January as a transfer from Arizona State. During his one season with the Sun Devils, the 6'3 215 pound signal caller saw playing time in one contest, which was a start against USC. Yellen completed 64% of his passes (28 of 44) for 292 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions in a 31-26 loss to the Trojans.
"I'm very happy to have received this news from the NCAA, and I appreciate them making this decision on my situation," Yellen said. "I am excited to be able to be available for my team this season and look forward to helping out any way I can."
Yellen posted impressive numbers during his two years as a starter atĀ Mission Viejo (Calif.) High School, earning him an invitation to the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game.
