Steelers tight ends Kevin Rader (87) and Dax Raymond (49) work on staying low at a training camp practice at Heinz Field -- STEELERS

Dax Raymond, we hardly knew you.

Raymond suffered an ankle injury earlier in the week as the Steelers began padded practices at Heinz Field. Saturday, he was waived/injured, replaced on the roster by undrafted rookie Kyle Markway. Markway had been released last week by the Giants.

With Raymond injured, the Steelers had just four healthy tight ends with which to work at practice this week. Raymond had been signed in the offseason after being released by the Bears.

Markway played collegiately at South Carolina, entering the draft after a junior season that saw him catch 31 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns.

Markway, 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, is considered a better blocker than receiver.

Raymond had spent much of the 2019 season on the practice squad of the Bears.

The Steelers signed veteran Eric Ebron in the offseason to a 2-year, $12-million contract after starter Vance McDonald suffered through a down season in 2019 due to injuries and an unsettled quarterback rotation.

The team used a fifth-round draft pick on Zach Gentry a year ago and also return former Youngstown State product Kevin Rader, who spent most of the 2019 season on their practice squad.

LOLLEY'S VIEW

The Steelers seemed to like Raymond, but this is a quickly moving train and the team couldn't keep it moving with just four tight ends in practice.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Raymond come back at some point to the practice squad, but the team needed a body to be able to do the things they want in preparation for the start of the 2020 season.
