The Penguins have signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a one-year contract extension, Jim Rutherford announced on Friday.

Ruhwedel, 30, was already under contract for the 2020-21 season in the final year of a two-year contract that carries a cap hit of $700,000. The extension signed today is for the 2021-22 season and carries a cap hit of $750,000.

"Chad is a reliable, depth defenseman who is a great teammate," Rutherford said in a team release. "He keeps himself in great shape and is always game-ready, which is important for a player in his role and the success of our team."

The 2019-20 season was Ruhwedel's fourth in the Penguins' organization. He appeared in 41 games this season, primarily filling in on the third defense pairing alongside Jack Johnson. Ruhwedel scored two goals, four assists and was a plus-4 rating.
