The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed 2014 fourth-round draft pick Sam Lafferty, a center, to a two-year entry-level contract, it was reported on Tuesday.
Lafferty, who turns 23 today, was signed out of Brown University following their elimination from the ECAC tournament. Lafferty led Brown in scoring this season with eight goals and 14 assists in 31 games.
Lafferty's contract doesn't kick in until next season, but he'll finish out the remainder of this season on an amateur tryout contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
“I don’t think it has sunk in yet,” Lafferty told the Altoona Mirror. “I’m still at school, and it’s been pretty crazy, but I couldn’t be more excited to get things going.”
Lafferty, a native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., was an alternate captain his junior and senior seasons at Brown. His strengths are his size (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) and speed. He's able to play on the penalty kill and has been praised by Brown coach Brendan Whittet for his hockey sense. He projects to be a bottom-6 type player.
