The Penguins signed their 2014 fifth-round pick, Anthony Angello, to a two-year entry-level contract, it was announced on Thursday.
Angello, 22, signed after the conclusion of his junior season at Cornell University, ending speculation that the forward could stay in college for another year and hit the free-agent market.
As a freshman at Cornell, Angello made his impact early, leading the team with 11 goals and ranking second in scoring with 24 points in 34 games. He won the Cornell Hockey Association's Greg Ratushny Award as Cornell's most promising rookie.
His offensive success continued into his sophomore season, with 12 goals and eight assists in 35 games, and remained steady throughout his junior season, with 13 goals and 13 assists in 33 games.
As a junior, Angello was named to the ECAC Second All-Star Team, All-Ivy League Second Team, and Cornell was the ECAC Regular Season Champion.
"I think he's simplified things in his own mind, as far as understanding what his process is,'' Cornell associate head coach Ben Syer said of Angello's progress. "When he keeps things simple, he's really effective. He's still painting his own picture. He's starting to come into his own.''
In addition to his size -- 6-foot-5, 206 pounds -- Angello's strengths are his playmaking and physical play. He projects to be an eventual bottom-6 center.
Angello's contract doesn't kick in until next season, and he'll finish out the year in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on an amateur tryout agreement. Prospects Sam Lafferty, Alex D'Orio, Jan Drozg, and Niclas Almari have also joined Wilkes-Barre on tryout agreements following the conclusions of their seasons.
