It looks like the Steelers will be seeing outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney when the Seahawks come to Pittsburgh in Week 2 of the regular season.
The Seahawks acquired Clowney from the Texans on Saturday in exchange for outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo, defensive end Jacob Martin and a 2020 third-round draft pick.
The trade closes the book on the ongoing tensions between Clowney and the Texans, which began in March when the Texans placed the franchise tag on Clowney. The Texans classified Clowney as a linebacker, which sets his salary at $15.97 million, when Clowney believed he should have been classified as a defensive end, which would have resulted in a salary of $17.13 million.
Clowney never reported to training camp and didn't attend Texans OTAs, much like Le'Veon Bell's previous dispute with the Steelers. A player who gets hit with a franchise tag can't be traded unless they actually sign the tag, which is why the Steelers weren't able to trade Bell. Clowney used the unsigned tag as leverage, only signing to be dealt to a team of his choosing. A deal reportedly fell through with the Dolphins earlier in the week because Clowney didn't want to play there and wouldn't sign the tag.
The two players the Texans got back aren't exactly notable. Mingo, a 2013 first-round pick, was rumored to be on his way to being released after a subpar preseason, and Martin was the Texan's sixth-round pick last year. Neither is a comparable pass-rusher.
The Texans still do not have a general manager after firing Brian Gaine in June. General manager responsibilities are being divvied up among existing front office personnel. So, I think this is like when I walk away from The Sims while it's unpaused, leaving my Sims to their own devices, and then come back to everything on fire.
