John Tortorella was fined $20,000 by the NHL for his recent postgame rant that criticized officials and the league after officials seemingly mismanaged the game clock.
An extra second and a tenth ticked off of the clock after a whistle was blown in the final minute of a tie game between the Blue Jackets and Blackhawks on Sunday. The Blue Jackets appeared to score the game-winner just as the clock hit zero seconds, but it was determined after a review that the puck crossed the goal line after the game ended. The lost second or so proved to be costly.
Tortorella's rant (which can be seen here) ripped officials for not "doing their freaking job," leading to the fine from the league.
Tortorella has also been place on a probation until Dec. 29, 2020. If he makes any similar comments, he'll be fined an additional $25,000.
Blue Jackets fans, believing the fine was unjustified, started a GoFundMe to pay Tortorella's fine. As of Thursday, the GoFundMe has raised just under $3,000 from over 100 donors.
Now, the fans can't actually pay Tortorella's fine for him. Instead, the money raised will be donated to The Tortorella Family Foundation.
The foundation's website says it "was created to enable our family to reach out to more children in disadvantaged situations, to help others who work to improve the lives of these children and their families, and to help those who protect children, animals and our environment from harm."
Donating to a good cause to spite the NHL? Seems like a win-win.
