The Penguins have traded forwards Joseph Blandisi and Jake Lucchini to the Canadiens in exchange for forwards Riley Barber and Phil Varone.
Barber and Varone will report to Wilkes-Barre.
Barber, 26, is a 6-foot, 195-pound right wing. The Washington, Pa. native has played in nine scoreless games for Montreal this season, and has recorded 31 goals and 29 assists in 64 games for the AHL's Laval Rocket.
Barber was originally a sixth-round pick of the Capitals in 2012, and spent his first four professional seasons in the Capitals organization, primarily with the AHL's Hershey Bears. He was scoreless in three games with the Capitals in 2016-17.
Barber is on a two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 at the AHL level. He'll be a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this summer. He is no longer exempt from waivers.
Varone, 29, is 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, and plays both center and wing. He's spent the entire season in Laval, where he's scored four goals and 10 assists in 27 games.
Varone is on a two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level and $450,000 at the AHL level. He'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He is no longer exempt from waivers.
Blandisi, 25, has split the season between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He's recorded two goals and three assists in 21 games with Pittsburgh and six goals and eight assists in 26 games with Wilkes-Barre.
Lucchini, 24, was an undrafted college free agent signing out of Michigan Tech by the Penguins at the end of the 2018-19 season. He's scored seven goals and eight assists in 53 games this season as a rookie on Wilkes-Barre.
